An Open Door To The World
Translated and expanded from: "UNE PORTE OUVERTE AU MONDE":
Open Gate To The World
Hello and Welcome.
-I used to always write in English but to be fair to my French compatriots, it
was time I wrote in French too. I am leading a revolution ;) – which I’d love to
express in a multitude of languages. So, as usual, I riot.
Why do I riot;) ? Well it will have to be in a calm manner… for I
do admit I fear the “baton charge police”… in these times of battering madness…
I am standing against intellectual poverty.
So, what is this? Intellectual poverty starts at school, with
poor, limited choice of subjects and topics. Our Young who attend school now are
the future adults –and yes we are talking about the same planet.
Of course I understand this: one needs to learn to read and
write, to express oneself and to count. But what about really learning to know this World?
I’ll go a bit fast in translation now: us, the people who studied for the A levels in
France in the 80's, we had our heads bashed and mashed by a myriads of topics many of us
never needed. There was no need for her to KILL FROGS, because our main program wasn’t science,
this was a small option for us, had we read about “clinically dead” via a video,
it would have sufficed!
What we did NOT learn in 1987: to get practice on job
interviews, make a CV, etc….and to be a good citizen who respects and offers to help the Elderly
and helps handicapped people open a door.
Us in the literacy and languages departments, we had this chance
to have an open door to the world – with a (small) choice of three foreign
languages.
-However, 3 hours per week per language isn’t really that much of
a program… and soon I will come back, on this e-Magazine, onto the IMPORTANCE of languages in the
NATIONAL EDUCATION, as well as AT WORK, and, in reference to being a Citizen of
this Word – one Civilised, cultured individual who can say Hello and Welcome in
a few languages – and yes, also “Thank You”, when one goes holidaying
abroad. Isn’t it always nicer to say “Hi” and “Thanks” to the Greek
waitress who is always helpful to you, in her native language? We can always greet Her, and say Thank You in her Language, it's Human Touch, it's Free, and is always Welcome.
This new site is hence launched in the favour of mind opening
towards The Other – something that we would like to see and feel towards us when
we talk to people who are “foreign” to us -let us not forget one thing: we are all Human! (however I am in
no way a xenophobic towards any "Alien" either.)
I will add, to conclude in this important note regarding England: the CHOICE of Languages at the National Education... is REALLY POOR, limited. Why is it always French, German, Spanish??! What's more: more and more nowadays in schools (say GCSE preparation key stages), after the Teens are "done" with, say, the old basics in French... they are NOT automatically offered the knowledge of another foreign Language, even if they were getting good results there!
- and what do you call this if not encouraging "intellectual poverty"?
-However, by choosing our approach and attitudes to situations, we all can help for a Change... A Human Touch Change.
It's not difficult: anyone can just choose to stop following fashion(s), think for themselves and consequently, dump the conditioning.
